Julian House provides high quality refuge accommodation for survivors of domestic abuse; in 2017 Julian House became the sole provider of refuge accommodation across B&NES, we also provide the Freedom programme, which is for women who have experienced domestic abuse. We have spaces for 17 women, men and trans people and up to 33 children at any one time. Freedom promotes positive changes and recovery for women and their children in a supportive environment. Three times a year we run a rolling 12 week course for women who have experience domestic abuse and provide crèche facilities for their children to enable attendance. Through listening to service users, we also now run The Crush Programme, which is a young people’s programme specifically targeting the needs of people age 13-19 who have experienced domestic abuse. This included people who have experienced domestic abuse at home or have been in an abusive relationship.

Send a Cow provide seeds, tools, livestock and agricultural training, alongside community development workshops in gender equality, conflict-resolution and farm business skills. Through our unique principle of 'passing on the gift' families we support commit to 'pass on' their training, seeds, and the first female offspring of their livestock to another family in need. In this way the original 'gift' strengthens entire communities as project benefits ripple out and spread our impact far wider than those we directly work with. “When we first start working with families, we don’t ask what they need. We ask them what they have already got.” Aklilu Dogosso, Send a Cow Ethiopia Send a Cow doesn't offer a quick fix solution to poverty and rural development - typically working with communities for three to five years to offer a hand-up rather than a hand-out and effect substantial and sustainable change. Within a few months malnourished families are eating regularly and are able to pay for children to attend school. Within a year families are diversifying their income streams to ensure they can survive when food is scarce and when unexpected disasters strike such as drought. Once graduated from Send a Cow families are economically stable with savings to invest and expand their farming businesses. Despite having helped over one million of the world’s poorest and most marginalised people out of poverty, there’s still more work to do. 220 million people in Africa go hungry every day, with nearly half living on less than 80p a day. It costs £650 to send a cow to a family in Africa. A cow is enough to provide a family with over 3,000 litres of milk a year. This milk gives nutrition to the whole family and brings a steady source of income every year from the scale of the surplus. In addition, using the cow’s manure on the land makes a huge difference to crop yields.

Ronald McDonald House Bristol comprises 21 ensuite bedrooms, 4 kitchens and dining areas, lounge and playroom, laundry facilities and landscaped gardens. Our house provides an inviting, clean comfortable and homely environment in which to spend time when not at their child's bedside and is situated a few minutes walk from the hospital. The families who stay with us come from across the South West as well as from the Bristol and Bath area and stay with us completely free for as long as their child is in hospital - which could be days, months or even years. Once they have a room with us the whole family is able to stay. Not only do we provide them with as much practical and emotional support as they need, keeping families together has proven to be incredibly important in the way in which parents and carers are able to cope with the stressful situation of having a critically ill child in hospital. We are an independent charity which means we have to raise all our running costs ourselves - with annual running costs of around £270,000, and no statutory or other guaranteed funding. We rely on donations, the generosity of the public and corporate supporters, as well as our fundraising events and initiatives in order to keep our doors open. RMHB is now in its 18th year of supporting families in need and during that time we have helped over 8,500 families and counting.
