We provide three days of nutritionally balanced food to local people in crisis. We'll also chat to people who visit us over a cup of tea and we may signpost people to other organisations which can support them to address the underlying cause of their crisis. Schools, churches, businesses and individuals donate non-perishable, in-date food to the Foodbank, usually through our ‘Community Collection Box Scheme’. ‘Supermarket Collections’ are another way that food is donated: These are food drives held at supermarkets where volunteers give shoppers a ‘Foodbank shopping list’ and ask them to buy an extra item or two for local people in crisis. Volunteers sort food to check that it’s in date. This is stored at our warehouse and then delivered to our distribution centres, ready to give to people in need. About 60 wonderful people volunteer with us every week, working across our different centres, our warehouse and our admin office. Claire House Children’s Hospice helps seriously and terminally ill children live life to the full by creating wonderful experiences and bringing back a sense of normality to family life. By providing specialist nursing care and emotional support we help families smile again when life couldn’t get any tougher

Our service is totally free of charge and we receive less than one third of our funding from the government. We provide an in-patient unit which has 12 patient beds. The beds are separated into 4 single rooms and 2 boys of 4. The average length of a patient’s stay is 11 days and 51% of our patients are discharged. In many cases we are able to manage a patient’s symptoms and discharge them so they can return to their home environment. Within our in patient unit we have clinical and palliative care specialists; medical and nursing staff; physio’s; occupational therapists; social workers and complementary therapists enabling us to provide patients and their families with a well rounded care and support package. We also run an out-patient service where patients receive treatment in medical outpatient clinics, which includes blood transfusions – when people come to us they are in and out in a day whereas when they go to Hospital, this procedure can often take two days. Last year 117 blood transfusions were undertaken at the Hospice, saving approximately 234 inpatient days within the Countess of Chester Hospital. Our medical outpatient clinic exists to help patients with life limiting illnesses manage their condition. In this clinic patients receive an individual care plan which has been produced by our medical team. Every year 1600 patients access our outpatient service. Our Bereavement Support Service is able to offer one-to-one counselling to support adults (aged 18+) who are dealing with bereavement. A service called Reflect exists to support children and young people aged under 18. Our Child Bereavement Counsellor runs sessions with children, their siblings and in some cases at local schools where staff and pupils have been affected by a sudden death.
