Realising potential: enabling disabled children, empowering parents
Nottingham, UK
We enrich and empower the lives of families in many important ways: SPEECH & LANGUAGE: We offer a speech & language service for children with Down's syndrome attending local mainstream schools, providing extra specialist support not always available in mainstream school. Supervised by a Speech and Language Therapist, we deliver sessions by DSA and Symbol Co-Workers. Sessions run on a 1-1 basis or in small groups, depending on the needs of the children. They take place every Monday during term-time. We work in partnership with external educational services and offer support and communication strategies to teachers or teaching assistants with them visiting and being involved in sessions or us visiting the child's school. PRE-SCHOOL: we provide pre-school Conductive Education classes. These form the core of our service and the starting point for all our children & families time with us. Within the pre-school facility we also provide the following activities: - pre-reading and writing - alternative and augmentative communication - eating and drinking Children & their families usually attend one session per week, and a parent comes with their child so that learning is embedded across the family. All sessions are delivered in small groups where children learn with other children of similar age and developmental needs. Pre-School is linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. GYM CLUB: our gym club provides on-going support in the form of a specialised activity club for children with cerebral palsy aged five years and over. As with our speech and language service, gym club provides extra support that might otherwise not be available. Family members attend with their child, and each child has an individual plan which is self-evaluated by the child after every session.
