Claire House Children’s Hospice helps seriously and terminally ill children live life to the full by creating wonderful experiences and bringing back a sense of normality to family life. By providing specialist nursing care and emotional support we help families smile again when life couldn’t get any tougher

It is because we passionately believe that everyone matters right up until the point they die that we support patients’ families and loved ones at what is arguably one of the most difficult times of their lives. We believe this is a privilege offered to us by those who decide to ask for our help and who put their complete trust in us. Patients are at the centre of all that we do and are at the heart of every decision we make at Beaumond House. We know that for many, taking the first step through the door of the hospice can be difficult and so for many people, our support starts before they reach our door. When they do come through our doors and hear the laughter and feel the warmth, many people tell us it was the best decision they made during one of the most difficult times of their lives. Every year we support around 500 patients and families from across the Newark and Southwell area with a team of committed and trained nurses, health care assistants and volunteers who deliver the highest standard of care and support to those who come to us. We have been doing this for the last 30 years and plan to continue doing so whilst ever there is a need for our support in this area.

We deliver a free counselling service to children and young people throughout Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. Our office is based in Newark and we provide over 150 free hours of counselling support each week. Our service is not funding by local authorities or by commissioning groups, we have to fundraise in order to keep delivering this vital support. It costs over £85,000 to run our service and are experiencing increasing difficulty in securing these funds whilst also dealing with increased referrals from GPs and statutory health services, who are unable to cope with the rising demand for emotional health services. In 2015/16 we supported over 1500 young people, helping them to form healthier emotional platforms upon which to build a more stable future. Young people refer to us with range of emotional health issues including anxiety, anger and depression. We also see the devastating effects of poor emotional health with one in eight young people self-harming and many coming to us with thoughts of suicide. With our help, young people are able to develop more effective coping strategies to help them cope with the pressure that life is putting on them. 58% of the young people we support are experiencing difficulties in direct relation to their home environment, parental break-up, abuse and neglect are common themes that we work with and support. We need support to continue our work and continue providing brighter futures for young people in Newark and throughout Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
