Say Aphasia Charity
Brighton, UK
Say Aphasia is a UK charity (Registered Charity No: 1169933) that supports people living with aphasia. Aphasia is a communication disability which occurs when the communication centres of the brain are damaged. It is usually caused by stroke, but can be caused by brain haemorrhage, head injury or brain tumours. Aphasia affects people differently – some people are unable to speak at all, others may have difficulty finding the right word to say or have difficulty reading, writing or using numbers. The emotional and social impact of having a communication difficulty can be huge, affecting relationships, employment, education, social lives, and confidence. Say Aphasia offer drop-in groups across the UK. The groups are open for anyone with aphasia to attend. The group provides an opportunity to socialise and meet other people experiencing similar challenges with communication. Everyday activities such as having a conversation, answering the ‘phone, taking a bus journey, watching TV, may suddenly become a source of frustration and struggle for the person with aphasia and for their families, friends and carers. A unique feature of the group is that the sessions are facilitated by people with aphasia, and supported by trained volunteers. No other such service exists. The group is a place to relax, exchange ideas and experiences, and meet people who understand. The drop-in helps people to make new friends, gain confidence and practise their speaking, reading and writing skills without any pressure or judgement. Some people may not have the support at home and so having these groups can significantly help them learn how to live with aphasia.
