Adrian Derbyshire's Campaign to Stamp Out Stigma, Bullying & Hate Crime
Warrington, UK
I've spoken to over 49,000 children & young adults in the first year of my campaign. I wanted to Inspire children so they can Believe in themselves, to Succeed in being positive Role Models. I also wanted to talk about the affects Stigma , Bullying and Hate Crime has on it's victims as I have also been a victim. As a former GB athlete I also wanted to inspire children to get outside and get active. Child obesity has risen dramatically these passed few years at an alarming rate so to promote Health & Well Being & To Go The Extra Mile for sports and healthy eating I started a hand cycle challenge wear I would hand cycle around Great Britain and the Isle of Man. To date I have hand cycled over 3,500 miles, completed a marathon a day since the campaign started in 2014 and hand cycled the TT circuit on the Isle of Man. In 2008, i suffered a near fatal Brain Haemorrhage due to a Four Inch Inoperable Brain Tumour which Drs said I had only a week to live, I battled to survive, having to re-learn to Read, Write & to speak again at 34yrs of age. Due to the brain haemorrhage, I contracted Chemical Meningitis which has left me a wheelchair user. My life had changed forever, to go to bed perfectly fit & healthy one evening, but to wake up in hospital three days later was to forever change my life. In six years I've managed to become an Ambassador for Eight charities, have coached over 6,000 children, young adults & adults, have competed at top elite level winning Gold & Silver medals, but becoming the Ambassador for Stigma, Bullying and hate Crime for the united Kingdom has become my greatest achievement. I want to continue visiting Schools, Colleges, Universities, Groups & After School Programs to continue spreading my campaign motto and ethos #InspireBelieveSucceed
