Despite its apparent affluence, there is deprivation and social exclusion in Richmond. The Vineyard Community Centre, supported by local businesses and churches and with the encouragement of statutory agencies, was set up in March 2012 to address this. Rocket Science recently published 'On the Edge', an independent study on behalf of grant-making charities in Richmond. It found that current services in the area are sometimes ineffective or unavailable and are on the edge of failing the people they need to support. The report stated that the ‘general perception of Richmond as a wealthy borough masks deprivation’. Changes in national and local government funding, the commissioning of services, cuts in benefits, crisis management and working in isolation have all led to uncertainty. In some cases, this has had a negative impact on vulnerable people and organisations supporting them. Our charity is at the forefront of supporting these vulnerable people. As well as our Morning Drop-in, we operate a foodbank, a Community Cafe for socially excluded people, a Charity shop and a new social enterprise called ‘Works of Love’ which provides a pathway for employment skills training.
