Opportunity Pre-School (Shrewsbury Opportunity Group)

Shrewsbury, UK

Opportunity Pre-School is a fully accessible and inclusive preschool which welcomes children of all abilities to play and learn together. Attendance fees are kept very low to ensure the greatest possible accessibility to all families, so a great deal of fundraising is needed to run the charity and maintain the purpose built setting. Staff are constantly updating their rigorous training to ensure that children's additional needs - however severe - present no barriers to the children fulfilling their potential in the setting. In 2016 we were re-awarded "outstanding" status in every category by OFSTED who said "Teaching is inspirational, providing highly motivating and challenging experiences for children..... partnerships with parents are excellent and staff go out of their way to provide inspirational support for children and their families......children are very happy within the pre-school". All children participate in all activities, and the welcoming of children with AND without additional needs ensures that family bonds and friendships can flourish regardless of ability. The Reggio Emilia philosophy is followed, with a child-centred approach at its centre. The Reggio Emilia Approach is an innovative and inspiring approach to early childhood education which values the child as strong, capable and resilient; rich with wonder and knowledge. In 2016 fundraising enabled the whole staff team to attend in-depth training in Reggio, Italy. There is also a strong focus on providing a sense of community for the whole family, with social and fundraising events, and specialised training, helping to forge bonds between parents and carers. The very special atmosphere of love and support is cherished by staff, families and children. Current fundraising is focused on upgrading the fabric of the building, ensuring year-round access to the outside area, and to renovating a local orchard for the children and local community.
