Building brighter childhoods through mentoring - Friendship Works

London, UK

We recruit and train adult volunteer mentors who commit to meeting with a child or young person three times a month for a minimum of two years. The children and young people we support face multiple disadvantages such as: - living with the effects of domestic violence, addiction or bereavement - supporting parents with mental health problems - being a young carer - having a learning disability - poverty. These circumstances have a negative impact on their well-being, educational attainment and puts them at risk of being trapped in cycles of disadvantage, resulting in poor outcomes later in life such as unemployment, mental health problems, substance misuse and crime. The one to one support provided by a mentor improves confidence and self-esteem, builds new skills, improves their experience of childhood by helping them to access new experiences have fun and explore new interests. "A mentor helps you stay out of trouble… they inspire you to do new things and not follow other people, but follow your dreams” Dean, Aged 12

JDRF UK

London, UK

Any funds raised as part of this project could help to fund our amazing research, which will help to improve the lives of the 400,000 people living in the UK who have type 1 diabetes. JDRF also aim to provide support to people who have a connection to type 1 diabetes. Providing invaluable resources when people are first diagnosed, when they attend school, university and if they become pregnant. An example of some of the exciting research projects we are funding is the encapsulation project. In type 1 diabetes your immune system – which is meant to protect you from viruses and bacteria – attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in your pancreas. Our encapsulation research is developing ways to implant insulin-producing cells in the body, while protecting them from the immune system. Wrapped in a protective coating, these encapsulated islets (insulin-producing cells) would be able to do the same job as healthy islets in the pancreas. This works because the protective capsule is a little like a sieve – tiny holes in the coating allow nutrients to fit through, enabling the cells to live and work well, but are not big enough to allow anything as big as an immune cell to get close to the precious islets.
