The Yard is an award-winning charity running adventure play services for disabled children, young people and their families in Scotland. We offer disabled children and their siblings the chance to experience creative, adventurous indoor and outdoor play in a well-supported environment. Since we opened in 1986, our services have grown significantly, but we will always retain our holistic approach and ethos of a child-centred and child-led play service.

Sadly, every year 5000 people die from IPF in the UK and the incidence is increasing. Not many people know that Chronic Respiratory Conditions are on the rise, and in Scotland this will increase by 30% over the next 20 years. Many cases remain undiagnosed. The effects of IPF can be frightening and severely debilitating, such as difficulty breathing, increased anxiety, tiredness and reduced day-to-day physical ability. IPF is a relatively rare but fatal condition which is caused by scarring to lung tissue, known as fibrosis; making it more difficult for your lungs to expand and for oxygen to move into your blood vessels. This condition will not have an exact cause, but instead a combination of factors leading to the illness, which can make it very hard for people to accept their diagnosis. For many people, it can be a struggle to make sense of a very ‘medical’ diagnosis like IPF. Instead, they would benefit from a simple and clear explanation of what the illness is, why it has happened and how they can get better. Deterioration can be rapid if left untreated, so preventative health information is vital. We have a simple solution to tackle this; our new animated video will provide a ‘general overview’ of IPF for someone who knows nothing about the illness, inclusive of all ages, backgrounds and literacy levels. A concise, yet comprehensive introduction to the topic will help reduce people’s anxiety about their condition, while at the same time we will also be raising awareness, helping to ensure that those at risk will be diagnosed earlier every year. Symptoms can be very difficult to diagnose, so the sooner this is recognised, the sooner someone can be given the best treatment and support.
