The Katie Piper Foundation
London, UK
The Katie Piper Foundation opened the UK's first live-in residential Rehabilitation Centre for adult survivors of burns in 2019. Survivors are also supported with restoration services - transforming the loss of hair and features through scarring from a lifelong trauma to something that is no longer a barrier to confidence. All of these services help the burns community with mental health, physical challenges including disability and social connection. The charity was the vision of writer, campaigner and presenter Katie Piper who survived a brutal acid attack back in 2008. We aim to support and compliment the crucial work done by the NHS burns units, ensuring that the lives they've saved are cherished and enriched through clinical and social rehabilitation. During times of Covid-19, we have fought to keep services going because our patients and clients tell us that it is more essential than ever to have their unique needs understood and supported. We now support remotely more than ever before. With the right funding, physiotherapy, well-being and scar management sessions can all take place through video calling. However, we also value the importance of face-to-face interaction more than ever and will fight to ensure that our original service can spring back into life after the 2020 lock-down phases ease. People living with severe burns and scars live all over the country. Our main hub is in Merseyside and we aim to be easily accessible to all survivors throughout the UK. Without our services, the consequences of trauma, pain and sudden visible difference can be isolating and lead to suicidal thoughts and downwards spiral of mobility and physical health. With them, survivors can build confidence, live independent lives and fulfill their own goals.
