Providing disadvantaged children with outdoor learning sessions

Richmond, UK

For schools in inner cities or more deprived areas providing learning outside the classroom opportunities is a financial challenge. The Holly Lodge Centre would like to increase the numbers of these pupils visiting us for education workshops to ensure that all children can receive the reported benefits of a school trip whatever their family income is. The Every Experience Matters (2008 K Malone) report draws on research from around the globe and provides evidence that children engaged in Learning outside the classroom achieve higher scores in class tests, have greater levels of physical fitness and motor skill development, increased confidence and self-esteem, show leadership qualities, are socially competent and more environmentally responsible. For our term time activities, such as pond dipping, invertebrates and Victorians we want to offer these at a discounted rate to schools where levels of pupil premium is above average and also cover some costs of transport to get to us. We want to continue our work with pupils with special educational needs and disabilities by providing inclusive sessions on our accessible nature trail, buying or creating new resources to do this and meet all needs. During the school holidays we will run a special free program of activities for other groups of children who may find it difficult to access nature, including Young Carers, children with disabilities and their families, and children with life limiting conditions.
