The CRRU is an elite and dynamic marine conservation charity based in northeast Scotland dedicated to the conservation, welfare and protection of Scottish whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) through scientific investigation, environmental education outreach and the provision of a 24-hour rescue service for sick, injured and stranded individuals. Conducting advanced training courses in marine mammal rescue year-round, the charity operates the only specialist response team specifically for live-stranded whales and dolphins in Scotland. To date, over 3,500 members of the public have undertaken rescue training with CRRU or currently contribute to our national citizen science cooperative. The CRRU’s professional team of volunteers (scientists, veterinarians and trained members of the public) are skilled and experienced to act and advise at the scene of a stranding, with first aid, veterinary treatment and re-floatation procedures as required. Having responded to over 840 call outs in Scotland since 1999, and with an ever-expanding interest and public participation in this area of the charity’s work, this life-saving area of the charity’s work requires ongoing and renewed support with medical equipment, consumables and specialist veterinary supplies. The charity responded to 54 call outs in 2022, but much-needed funds and welcomed donations will facilitate an even higher attendance / response rate than presently possible with current resources.
