The Wave Project Scotland

Dunbar, UK

The Wave Project is a charity that runs free surf courses and a surf club for young people facing disadvantage, be it through poverty, social isolation, disability or mental health challenges. The focus of the courses is improving clients’ emotional wellbeing, self-esteem, confidence and motivation through a unique combination of surfing, peer mentoring, the outdoors and friendship. Since its local pilot the project has helped to transform the lives of nearly 100 young people and their families across southern Scotland; helping them to improve their wellbeing and life skills, make new friends and find new purpose in their lives. Here's what some our superstar surfers from previous courses think of the Wave Project! "I feel more confident around people at school and I’m more alert in classes. I want to do more after school and I am more enthusiastic about doing things. I hope to join the local athletics club and I’m coping better with homework. I feel like school isn’t as much of a challenge – I feel more confident about myself and less nervous about speaking to new people." Miss EH. 15 East Lothian "In the Wave Project I joined in every thing they said, this is new for me as I don't normally feel able to join in. I really felt comfortable with all the guys helping and taking part. I made good progress with going on the surfboard and I am very proud of that. I don't often get to do stuff I'm proud of. I love being in the water and I love the crashing of the waves. I can't wait to go again with the club, and see all the guys again.' Mr WL. 14 East Lothian

One Feeds Two

North Berwick, UK

37,500 meals and a trip to Kenya later, JP returned home determined to take One Feeds Two global. Buzzing about his idea, JP applied to Virgin Unite’s ‘Screw Business As Usual’ competition who put together a crack team to help him scale the concept. Enter Mark and Owen. The pair with the right experience and – more importantly – the enthusiasm to really get One Feeds Two off the ground. Back in Edinburgh, JP sold Elephant Juice to focus on inviting the food industry to adopt One Feeds Two as an ethical standard. And since then? We’ve been busy partnering with food brands – and providing thousands more school meals. Whenever we eat, we’re spoilt for choice. But what if that choice was simpler, but made us feel even better? If you buy a meal carrying our logo, we provide a school meal to a child living in poverty. So if you see our logo in restaurants and supermarket aisles, on your sandwich box or takeaway container, you can feel even better about your choice. Knowing that you’ve done something good, just by making a simple decision. And when something this simple makes such a big difference, why not do it every single day? Because imagine if we all did it, every single day? Right now giving charitably is an activity in itself – whether you’re fundraising or making a donation. But by getting a collective of food companies on board with our idea, we’re making charitable giving a part of the daily routine. Something that happens every day – it could even happen every time we eat. And because we oversee everything, it’s easy for food companies to get involved. So the more people hear about us, and food companies join us, we can start to completely transform the way we all address child hunger. We’re creating a new ethical standard – come and join us today.
