Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation

Warrington, UK

The Foundation works in partnership with local, regional and national agencies to empower individuals to improve their lives using sport and physical activity as a vehicle for change. With over 30 projects currently being delivered within the Warrington and Cheshire locality, The Foundation seeks to address physical, social and emotional well-being needs of people throughout the life course. By being closely affiliated to the Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club, The Foundation is able to demonstrate and reinforce the importance of a healthy lifestyle through the support provided by the professional players and coaches as role models within the community. The team is a powerful influence on the local population and being the heartbeat of the town, act as a catalyst for positive behaviour change. The Wolves Foundation deliver a plethora of sports projects including various Rugby League, Handball and Volleyball initiatives in educational establishments and within the local community through the provision of pathways from participation to elite performance. Central to the ethos of the organisation is the provision of opportunities that reflect local demographics and subsequent need, as illustrated by Total:Sport. With less than 5% of youngsters with additional needs accessing mainstream community sports clubs, The Foundation, following consultation with parents and carers established the PANDAs Football Club who now compete in various local, regional and national competitions. The Wire2Wolves heritage project which comprises of an interactive timeline documenting the entire history of the Club and the town provides opportunities to engage with groups and individuals using innovative approaches. For example, the Pass it Back initiative, working alongside agencies such as Age UK, NHS 5 Boroughs Trust Memory Service, Warrington Hospital and Sporting Memories Network, has raised awareness of Dementia and the network of local services available. The extensive Arts and Dance programme, offered by The Foundation attracts a cohort of the local community who wish to participate in non-traditional forms of physical activity. The GRACE (Grow, Respond, Aspire, Create, Express) project aimed at older people in Warrington, encourages individuals to stay active through Dance. With an ageing population in Warrington, the health implications of inactivity are considerable and the sessions are invaluable to the participants. The impact of The Foundation can best be demonstrated by the significant contribution of the varied and vibrant projects in addressing wider social agendas including crime reduction, employment, health and community isolation. Whilst sport and physical activity act as the core mechanism for engagement, the supplementary outcomes enhance community cohesion by promoting positive relationships, raising aspirations and empowering participants to make informed lifestyle choices.

St Ann's Hospice

Cheadle, UK

St Ann's Hospice supports and cares for around 3,000 people living with cancer and other life limiting illnesses across Greater Manchester. We have 3 sites at Heald Green, Little Hulton and the Neil Cliffe Centre. As well as having inpatient beds we also provide day therapy, a supportive outpatient service and a Hospice at Home team. At St Ann's we need to raise around £16,000 every day to continue to provide vital care to our patients and families. We wouldn't be able to exist without the incredible support of the Greater Manchester community. Our care is free of charge, but we only receive a third of our funding from the NHS. The rest is down to the kindness of our supporters.

Warrington Christmas Meal for Disadvantaged Families

Warrington, UK

On the 23rd December 2015 Warrington Youth Club will welcome 150 children and young people and their families for a hot Christmas meal. These young people will all be from disadvantaged backgrounds including disabled young people, young people living in supported housing and those with additional needs. Warrington has high levels of deprivation and foodbank usage is growing in the town. This project will ensure that the area's most disadvantaged families can have an enjoyable festive meal. Young people aged 7 - 19 (and up to 25 for disabled young people) will be treated to a hot dinner, fun activities and gifts. For many of our service users, this will be the only gift they recieve this year. Last year, one parent told us that we had 'made Christmas' for her and her family; she couldn't afford to provide gifts for her children. After the meal every family will be given a hamper of long-life food to help them into the New Year.
