Francis House Children’s Hospice has been providing respite care for children, teenagers and young adults with life-limiting conditions since it opened its doors in 1991. The hospice helps over 370 families from all over the north west of England. Caring for someone, often for twenty four hours a day, seven days a week can put a huge strain on families. In spite of their desperate need, many shy away from seeking help from a hospice. They expect that it will be a sad place, and some may not feel ready to face the true nature of their child’s condition. When they do come to Francis House they find a place of rest, fun and enjoyment in a comfortable, home from home environment. All our services are completely free. By far the largest part of funding comes through charitable donations. In recent years, medical interventions and improved methods of care have seen the number of children living into early adulthood increase. To meet this growing need, a seven bedroom extension for teenagers and young adults was opened in May 2014. All children who come to Francis House have life-limiting conditions and their care is palliative. When life is short it must be of the highest quality. That's what we work hard to achieve.

Headway Stockport provide a regular drop in service for the survivors of brain injury and their families. Many people find themselves isolated following brain injury and Headway provides the support and guidance survivors and their families need. We provide regular information evenings so that people can learn more about their brain injury and also regular social activities. This is a vital way for our members form friendships, build social skills and increase confidence. This in turn improves mental health. We have an annual activity weekend, where our members challenge their fears and learn new skills. This involves rock climbing, canoeing, abseiling, archery, orienteering and much more. As many of our members have physical disabilities we need to book with specialist services, which can be expensive. The weekend has a massive impact on our members who have had a weekend of good, structured activity, fun and learning. Our members face their fears, gain confidence and make new friends. This is a vital part of the service we offer. Many of our members are unable to work due to the issues associated with their brain injury so we look to fund the majority of the holiday, so that funding is not a barrier to accessing the weekend.

Created from one families devastating loss, Reuben's Retreat helps families loving and living with a child unlikely to reach adulthood and families who have been bereaved of a precious child by providing a place to Relax, Recharge, Remember & Rebuild... Reuben had been enjoying a family holiday in Devon when a routine trip to A&E resulted in the worst nightmare imaginable. Nobody could ever have known what was about to unfold for Reuben and his family and what followed turned out to be the worst 7 days of their lives. Reuben was diagnosed with a brain tumour that was cancerous and extremely aggressive. Tragically he passed away in his Mummy’s arms on the 21 August 12 aged just 23 months. The care Reuben’s family received, the families they met along the way and the support they encountered inspired them to launch Reuben’s Retreat shortly after Reuben moved to heaven. The charity’s primary goal is to create a home-from-home for families coping with the serious illness of a child, providing respite breaks and the chance to build happy memories. We also provide essential support and counselling for Mums, Dads and siblings with a seriously poorly youngster or those who have lost their precious child, brother or sister. By April 14, the charity had raised sufficient funds to purchase the Retreat’s forever home, an incredible Victorian building set in beautiful parkland. The building lends itself to being refurbished in phases, which allows us to generate income through appropriate funding streams and most importantly, as each phase becomes a functional facility we can step-up the level of service delivery. We have now completed Phase 1 and 2 renovations to The Lodge at Reuben's, creating our dedicated bereavement and counselling centre. Phases 3 to 10 comprise of renovations to the main building to create well-being day-care facilities, holistic and therapeutic services and 4 large accessible self-catering apartments to provide respite breaks for families . And this is where we need your help... We need to raise a further £2 million (over the next 5 years) to complete the necessary works and bring to fruition one very special bereaved Mummy's vision, a vision that will help other families for decades to come. In just 3 years we have supported 160 families, but sadness is never far from our door and there are many more families out there in need of our help.
