We need to continue to keep up with need and demand! The literature tells mums all they need to know about monitoring baby movements, including common myths and why using home dopplers for reassurance can be dangerous. So, why is this information so important? A baby's movements indicate its wellbeing and a change in your baby's movements could be a sign that they are in distress, although that is not the only cause. The majority of mums who have a stillbirth (2 out of 3) report that they had noticed their baby's movements change. By reporting all cases of reduced fetal movement promptly, assessments can be carried out and those babies thought to be at risk can be delivered early. It is thought up to a third of stillbirths could be prevented this way. A similar campaign in Norway caused a huge decrease in stillbirth rates - we aim to do the same. The UK is 33rd out of 35 similar high income countries for stillbirth rates, that's 16 babies that are stillborn or die within the first 24 hours of life EVERY DAY. It needs to and can change. We currently send out 60,000 leaflets every 2-3 months JUST to the midwives who receive a regular order. These leaflets cost £1,450 to print, so a £1,000 donation from Starbucks would fulfil 2 months worth of orders and ensure that 40,000 pregnant women receive a lifesaving leaflet.

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are the leading palliative and end-of-life care providers in North West Surrey. We’re so lucky to have such an innovative and flexible service available to us, which addresses and responds to the needs of each individual and helps them to achieve the best possible quality of life. Hospice care has changed over the years, and the conditions we now treat are more complex. The majority of the patients we treat have a cancer, but we are being asked to care for an ever-increasing number of people with other conditions, such as heart disease, motor neurone disease (MND), chronic pulmonary conditions, Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. These conditions generally require more complex and lengthier medical treatment and the attention of more nursing staff - a change of emphasis which, when combined with the fact that people are also living longer, means the nature of hospice care is changing dramatically, and changing fast. We have a vision to be able to provide better, more efficient care for local people. To achieve this vision for future generations requires new homes for our hospices. We will create a new Woking Hospice by converting a redundant corporate office building, this will include all 20 in-patient beds (currently 10 at Woking and 10 at Sam Beare). Meanwhile, Sam Beare Hospice in Weybridge will be transformed into a dedicated Wellbeing Centre for day and community patients. These new homes will make such a difference to the patient experience. In-patient care will be in an environment that has been designed for the purpose, and where all of our staff and expertise are in one place. This will enable us to improve the quality of in-patient care we provide, and will help us provide care in a much more cost-effective way. Our Day Care service will be completely transformed into more holistic Wellbeing Centres. Furthermore, we will be able to double the number of day patients we can support each week from the local area. We’ll have more purpose-built rooms at the new Woking Hospice and at Sam Beare Hospice; the complete suite of rooms will allow us to almost double the number of patients we are able to support. It will also enable us to offer a much wider range of care and support services. For example, we will be able to offer our physically dependent patients a morning session in our assisted bathing suite. Our Community Nursing team will work across both sites. They will ensure that we continue to reach patients across a large part of Surrey and the hospice buildings will provide a base, with proper meeting and consulting rooms, to discuss patients’ needs in a suitable environment. Alongside a new electronic patient record system, this will mean our nurses will be able to see more patients each day, and have more time for each visit.
