The Sick Children’s Trust believes that every family who has a seriously ill child in hospital should be able to stay together, close to their child’s bedside. However, the continuing problem facing many families is that paediatric medical care for the most serious illnesses, including heart transplants, liver surgery, neurology and cancer treatments, continues to be highly specialised, with these hospitals often being miles away from where many families live and offering minimum or no family accommodation. We, therefore, operate ten ‘Homes from Home’ at eight leading children's hospitals across the country to support these families. Each of our Homes provides families with a private family bedroom where they can have a restful night of sleep after a long day on the wards, vital shared amenities such as kitchens where they can have a home-cooked meal and living areas where they can have quiet time together, as well as the practical and emotional support of our house staff.

We focus on educating local schools, community groups and the public about food, farming and sustainability, and want to start teaching about solar energy, and sustainable energy systems. This solar array would give us the opportunity to teach our visitors about sustainable energy, whilst reducing our electricity costs and increasing the overall sustainability of the site and the farm's projects. In addition to the solar array we will partner with Demand Energy Equality to deliver 4 bespoke solar workshops - these aim to increase energy literacy by teaching participants how to make a solar panel, teaching soldering, electronics, physics and sustainability. One of these workshops will be for our 12-18 year old volunteers, one for our unemployed adult volunteers, and two will be for our adult visitors to the farm. The lifespan of the panels is 20+ years and the reduction in energy changes and climate amelioration will reduce energy useage from the grid and mitigate climate change albeit in a very small way. However the impact will be greater due to participants in the workshops and visitors learning about climate change and how to mitigate it through use of solar harnessing and discussions about other ways of protecting the environment which will lead to further talks on promoting diversity.
