Shropshire & Staffordshire Blood Bikes

Stafford, UK

Currently hospitals which urgently require blood have little choice but to call a local taxi company to collect and deliver the blood, with the hospital then being charged retail rates for this “service”, which can be £200-300 per trip! That’s where we come in. Apart from blood, SSCBB also transports a variety of urgent medical items including breast milk donated by women which is used to feed premature babies. This is achieved using temperature-controlled boxes attached to our bikes. We are also open to transporting other urgent items such as patient notes, electronic scan information or small pieces of urgently-needed surgical equipment. Across the UK there are similar groups which operate for the benefit of their local area and NHS. We cooperate with these groups, linking together to form the Blood Bike Network, to deliver this vital service across the country, saving the NHS money and, most importantly, saving lives! With the ever-growing need for the NHS to save money without compromising patient care, the demands on the charity continue to grow, year on year, and SSCBB must grow to meet these demands. To do this, we need continued donations of funding, as well as more volunteer riders, fundraisers and controllers.

The Harry Johnson Trust

Shrewsbury, UK

The Harry Johnson Trust supports children aged 0-18 who receive care and treatment from The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, Shropshire. Our charity was set up in memory of seven year old Harry, who died following a nine month fight with Double Hit Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The trust offers help and support to children and teenagers who receive care from the Oncology Team at The Princess Royal Hospital. We achieve this in many important ways. For example, one of our projects is called Harry's Hampers. Inside these hampers, we gather a few bits and pieces that the family might find useful in the first few days in hospital, things that in the rush and worry might have been left at home or not thought about. This kind of thing makes such a the difference at a difficult and worrying time for families. From family trips out that take the financial pressure off parents who may have to take time off work to take care of their child, to buying books and toys for the ward, we offer help for children and teenagers with cancer where we can. Please get in touch or visit our website for more details!
