Any funds raised as part of this project could help to fund our amazing research, which will help to improve the lives of the 400,000 people living in the UK who have type 1 diabetes. JDRF also aim to provide support to people who have a connection to type 1 diabetes. Providing invaluable resources when people are first diagnosed, when they attend school, university and if they become pregnant. JDRF are responsible for 546 research projects globally, one of which is the development of the Artificial Pancreas. The artificial pancreas uses a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump to automatically deliver accurate levels of insulin into the body as and when it is needed, with the help of a computer algorithm. The CGM and insulin pump both already exist in their own right, however the computer algorithm will allow the two to communicate and ensure that the patient receives the correct amount of insulin throught the day and night. On a daily basis, blood-glucose levels will require much less monitoring by an individual; they will be managed more tightly which, in turn, will reduce long-term health complications. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced approval of the Medtronic MiniMed 670G hybrid closed-loop system, the first device ever approved to automate the dosing of insulin to reduce high blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes. JDRF considers the Medtronic MiniMed 670G to be an artificial pancreas. Whilst this is a significant step forward in improving the lives of those living with type 1, there is still much work to be done before this, and other artificial pancreas systems, can be widely available here and around the world. *Please note that the above project is one of many important research projects funded by JDRF.
