Age UK Westminster
London, UK
Age UK Westminster is an autonomous and independently funded organisation, offering direct services to older people in the London borough of Westminster. We exist to promote the well-being of older people in the City of Westminster and to help them lead independent, fulfilling lives for as long as possible.
We provide a wide range of services that reduce hardship, disadvantage, loneliness and isolation for older people in our local community. The population of Westminster is particularly diverse, which means that we provide a lot of support to Black & Minority Ethnic groups (BAME) resident in the borough. Between October 2024 and September 2025, we made 22,893 client contacts, providing a variety of services including Activities, Befriending, Dementia, Digital Inclusion, and Information & Advice. Our 190 amazing volunteers helped us deliver our services, contributing 11,642 volunteer hours. Across the year, we had 4,533 attendances at 311 activities and our Information & Advice team generated an astounding £1,138,347.75 in grants and benefits for 1,303 older people. Our Exercise at Home service also delivered 212 exercise sessions supporting older Westminster residents to stay active for longer.
The Garden Classroom
London, UK
The Garden Classroom (TGC), based in Northeast London, offers a wide range of transformative nature connection experiences to some of the most nature-deprived people in the country. Our work supports the long-term health and happiness of our communities, predominantly in Islington, Hackney and Haringey, and aims to inspire and nurture care and responsibility for the environment. Every year, we engage around 13,000 individuals facing social and economic deprivation in a range of fun, immersive programmes. We hold the Quality Badge from the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom.
Common outcomes include improved learning for children, improved physical and mental health, renewed and newfound community connections, and a deepened or newfound connection with nature.
Our programmes include:
1.EDUCATION -We work with local primary schools to deliver hands-on and engaging outdoor, curriculum-linked sessions that foster curiosity and respect for nature while promoting health and wellbeing. Our priority is those schools with a high proportion of disadvantaged pupils to ensure we reach those children who stand to benefit most from our work.
Our wide-ranging sessions are delivered in parks, gardens, and other nature spaces and include ‘Climate Change for Kids’, a series of sessions over the school year that aim to educate children about climate change and promote a sense of stewardship for the local environment and wider planet.
2.COMMUNITY includes:
*Little Explorers -Free weekly drop-in sessions for under 5’s and their parents/carers at local greenspaces, with the aim of encouraging discovery of nature in a fun and safe environment and supporting mental health and well-being. Sessions introduce participants to the possibilities that their local greenspaces offer, provide opportunities for local families to meet and thereby reduce the isolation that many new parents feel, and encourage community cohesion.
*Community Gardening- Weekly urban gardening sessions at a range of local greenspaces. At each session we offer stimulating activities interspersed with information sessions to ‘Community Gardeners’ so that they really understand the value of the work they are doing at a local, national and global level. Our Community Gardeners report increased levels of social contact and improved physical and mental wellbeing. Community Gardeners also tell us that they are more likely to use these spaces, enjoy the benefits to health and well-being that they offer, and take pride in and cherish them as a result of involvement.
3.COUNTRYSIDE- Camping residentials and day trips for disadvantaged local children. These immersive outdoor experiences, away from family and school, offer the opportunity for primary school children to experience the outdoors and connect with nature. For many of those who attend, the value of these trips is immeasurable, providing experiences that many of us take for granted but which, for them, are totally out of the ordinary.
